Malcolm was raised to believe that the world was divided into suckers and people who preyed on them. He damn sure knew he was no sucker. His mom, Nancy, ran a really profitable racket she called a charity. Mostly she bilked old lady’s out of their pensions. The funny thing was Malcolm’s dad, Geoffrey, was a big time detective down at police plaza. Malcolm never could figure out if dad was clueless, too much in love or if mom was just that could with the b.s.
When dad wasn’t at work his was playing chess. Chess he said was a thinking man’s game. And if a man wasn’t thinking he wasn’t living. Of course dad’s idea of thinking was outsmarting the other guy. Taking him “down town” as he liked to say.
The summer Malcolm turned 17 they moved to an even bigger house then he grew up in. He was annoyed at first changing schools and all, right up until her met the girl next door that is.
Cassandra Goth was the perfect mix of strange and sweet. One minute she’d be all riled up about the government and how they were putting chemicals in our water to pacify us. And the next she’d be climbing a tree to rescue old lady Crumplebottom’s cat.
They became the best of friends if they weren’t at school they were with each other.
His parents didn’t approve of Cassandra. Dad said she was to unstable and Mom said she lacked thenecessary class for a governors wife. Yeah that’s right Mom expected Malcolm to enter politics. She figured with her husband on the force and Jr. in the mayor’s office she could rule the city.
But love had other ideas. Cassandra wasn’t a sucker and she sure as heck didn’t prey on anybody. So if his parents were wrong on one score maybe they had it all wrong. Sometimes He would sneak off and met her in the park. Where they’d play chess or just talk. He loved to listen to her explain her crazy theories.
Other times he’d sneak over to her place and listen to her play her violin. Cassandra planned on be a concert violinist one day. It was also in the Park that they had their first Kiss.
From that moment on Malcolm’s world changed. Cass didn’t tell him what to think. She just encouraged him to do so.
Cassandra’s parents, Mortimer and Bella Goth, were just as nice as she was but even weirder. Mortimer wrote science articles for “Science National Magazine”. As for Bella, well I’m pretty sure she was spy. Cass was closest to her little brother Alexander the two of them could play chess for hours.
Malcolm and Cassandra married the minute they graduated, moved into a small little house of their own and never looked back.
His mom visited once to try and get him “back on track” but he was past all that now. Casandra’s love was showing how to be a better person. Which was a good thing because soon he was going to be a father.
When Cass got pregnant his folk’s finally realized that things were not going back to the way they were. They stopped coming over. He’d still get a call on his birthday but that was about the only contact. Malcolm was kinda ok with this. Raising a baby was gonna be hard enough without them trying to turn it into what he’d been.
